Beginning Watercolor - Carole Berren
April 13 - May 18 (5 classes - no class 5/4) 2 - 5 PM

In this class you will explore the use of all watercolor materials, glazing and color theories. You will learn how to create every color using only a 6 color palette. Intensity in colors, edges, washes, transparencies and value relationships will be demonstrated and taught in class. Instruction will be geared to each individual according to their own understandings and experience.

Tapestry Weaving - Janet Austin
April 19 - May 10 (4 classes)
9:30 AM - 12 Noon

Tapestry is an ancient weaving technique for creating images. Tapestries can be realistic, abstract or geometric. Some examples are the Unicorn Tapestries and Navajo rugs. 
We will use simple frame looms to learn the basic techniques in class, and students may take their looms home to work between classes. Information on designing, materials, tools and other resources will also be included. No previous weaving experience is necessary.

$35 loom deposit (refunded when loom is returned)

Our April 12th Community Event will feature Janet.
She will talk about tapestry weaving, her work and give us a
demonstration on one of her looms.


Painting with Pastels -
Jeanne Tangney

2:30 - 5 PM
Using your photo references as a starting point, this class will explore various techniques for creating expressive paintings in pastel. We will start by looking for interesting compositions while simplifying details. Explore your choice of subject, including landscape, still life, florals or portraiture. The fundamentals of pastel painting will be covered in depth with an emphasis on color and value. Classes will include demonstration of methods, materials and techniques as well as plenty of individual attention. This class is appropriate for all levels.

Watercolor Painting on Yupo -

Learning to paint watercolor on Yupo (a very slippery surface) is both challenging and also a lot of fun. You really can't make a mistake...no matter how hard you try. Experimenting and exploring are what's important. Results are amazing and will take you further in your painting process. Through many guided exercises and free experimentation you will gain confidence using this exciting painting surface. This class is open to all levels.

Figure Drawing - William Heydt

The artist and model is one of the most enduring relationships in art.  This is a class for students to learn to work from live models in a studio setting.  Although this course is designed for beginners, experienced artists are invited to join us and enjoy this drawing experience. Instruction is personalized and geared to each student's abilities.

The Art of the iPhone - Jan Armor

It's a new age. The iPhone and iPad have provided us with a whole new way to make pictures. In this workshop you will learn how to create artistic photographs with your iPhone. You will also learn how to use the best and unique camera apps to transform your images into something special. Learn the ins and outs of posting on social media like Instagram, Tumbler, Tweeter and Facebook. And finally, learn how to transfer and print the images both large and small without losing resolution. Students must have an iPhone 4, 5 or 6 and will have to purchase a few apps prior to class that will cost about $15.

Mixed Media Collage with Acrylics -

Learn how to layer papers, old artwork and recycled materials through discovery, while welcoming pleasant surprises and planning for desired effect. You will be expertly guided through tearing, cutting, gluing and the use of mediums with acrylic paint. We will focus on composition through color and texture combinations. Appropriate for all levels.

Watercolor Collage Workshop -

Stop! Don't throw away that watercolor painting! There are many times when artists want to make changes to their paintings but with transparent watercolor, especially with staining pigments, these changes can be difficult. By layering papers on the surface, your paintings can be completely transformed with a colorful textured surface. Alter unsuccessful paintings or create a new watercolor collage. Tissue papers, vice papers along with torn watercolor paper will all be used to create a new masterpiece!

Hands on Location Photography -

6 - 8  PM
Each week, the class will meet at a predetermined, specified location in Southern RI. A lesson on technique or composition will be followed by practice in the field. Potential subjects include: interiors (low light photography) and natural habitats, portraiture, long exposure photography, manual exposure and flash photography.
Students should own and have a working knowledge of their camera. Tripod will be needed.

Drawing Up Close - Felicia Touhey

This is a class for students who have had an introduction to drawing and wish to develop their skills further. While drawing from up close observations, we will create exciting and vibrant drawings with an emphasis on composition and personal drawing styles. You will explore line, textures, value and form while using a variety of drawing materials and papers. Instruction will be geared to individual interests and abilities.

First Steps First, Beginning Painting -

Learning to see and compare simple shapes of value and color is how we start. We will advance each week in our knowledge of composing shapes, creating form and learning how to see and mix those colors. If weather allows, we will paint outside. Demonstrations and talks will start you quickly on your way!
This class is geared for beginners or those who want a refresher course. Acrylic and Oil paints are welcome.

Human Portrait Drawing -

Working from a live model you will learn how to draw a realistic portrait, utilizing all elements of anatomy, structure, facial features and personality. Line, values and tonal mass will be taught over the course of the class resulting in the creation of a dynamic and exciting portrait.

Using intuition, explore contemporary drawing and painting. Combine both physical and contemplative methods in our artwork. Engage the "process" of the painting in the "present" rather than concentrating on the end result. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of spatial structure; arrangement and organization of forms; and the impact of color and rhythm needed to make a work of art complete.
All levels (Some experience with paint helpful)
