Anthony Tomaselli Workshop


Painting with Passion

Five Paintings in two days!
This workshop is an intensive 2-day study of REPETITION and APPROACH. We will, without pressure, start and possibly complete 4 to 5 paintings of various shapes and sizes. Engage your thoughts, feelings and passion while working on several paintings!  The goal is to expand your thinking about "How Paintings are Made" while maintaining the energy and vitality that paintings begin with. Anthony will conduct many demos in the course of two days. Lively and thoughtful critiques will be an important part of this workshop and students are encouraged to actively participate in them. Instruction is personalized and geared to all abilities.

Drawing Up Close - Felicia Touhey

This is a class for students who have had an introduction to drawing and wish to develop their skills further. While drawing from up close observations, we will create exciting and vibrant drawings with an emphasis on composition and personal drawing styles. You will explore line, textures, value and form while using a variety of drawing materials and papers. Instruction will be geared to individual interests and abilities.

Foundations of Digital Photography
Cindy Horovitz Wilson
September 7 - 28 (4 classes)
4 - 6 PM
In this class we will explore digital terms, exposure, focusing, white balance, file size and resolution, all the ingredients necessary to understand the basics of technical proficiency. We will practice and become comfortable with the settings on your digital camera through hands on classes, assignments and critiques. Learn to make photographs instead of taking photos!

Honing Your Vision - Photography Portfolio Development

How does one create a cohesive body of work? This class is designed for the student who is interested  in taking their vision to the project/portfolio level. Each class will have a critique of the current body of the students work with constructive ideas on how to grow and expand to a more concise portfolio. Group participation and encouragement will give each student directions in which to explore and strengthen their work.
Knowledge of basic photography required. This will not be a technical class. Class size limited to 6 - 8 students.

A River on Fire - Jan Armor
Saturday, October 1 
3 - 9 PM
There is much to photograph at Water Place Park when the river is on fire. Our 6-hour workshop combines a lecture with an instructional photo walk during WaterFire. This lighting is special - "Flames of Hope, A Celebration Of Life" to call awareness to breast cancer. It includes a spectacular procession of torchbearers with performances and the lighting of the braziers. While immersed in this festive atmosphere, you will learn how to create both artistic low light images and photographs of street life during our city's own version of Carnival.
We will begin at WAA for an informative lecture on both street and low light techniques then proceed to Providence for a guided photowalk of WaterFire.

Mixed Media Collage with Acrylics -

Learn how to layer papers, old artwork and recycled materials through discovery, while welcoming pleasant surprises and planning for desired effect. You will be expertly guided through tearing, cutting, gluing and the use of mediums with acrylic paint. We will focus on composition through color and texture combinations. Appropriate for all levels.

Fully Attired - Figure Drawing

In this class we will draw the human figure fully clothed while sitting, standing and moving. We will learn to understand composition, use of negative space, perspective, anatomy, clothing, and line quality while strengthening our drawing ability as it relates to the human figure. Appropriate for all levels.

Tone to Texture - Trish Hurley

1:30 - 4 PM

This class will start slow - talking about the simple basics of white and black and how light and shadow create forms in space.  You will see and understand forms and learn to transfer and build on your vision. Mixing the right tones of color and application of paint will be more of the emphasis of this class as we start with value paintings in acrylic paint and work into glazing with oil. With some simple patient steps, your paintings will come alive from the canvas like never before! Appropriate for all levels.

Pushing Pastels - Jeanne Tangney

Using your photo references or still life props as a starting point, this class will explore various techniques and exercises for creating expressive paintings in pastel. We will start by looking for interesting compositions while simplifying details. Explore your choice of subject, including landscape, still life, florals or portraiture. The fundamentals of pastel painting will be covered in depth with an emphasis on color and value. Classes will include demonstration of methods, materials and techniques as well as plenty of individual attention. This class is appropriate for all levels.

Shibori Textile Art Designs -
Ann Bianchi

October 22 & 23 (2 classes)
10 AM - 2 PM
Fabrics from natural cellulose fibers (cottons and silks) will be our "canvases" as we experiment with historical and cultural dyeing and resist methods. Working in the styles of Arashi Shibori, Itajime Shibori and Adire Elesso, we'll add colors to white cloth for fantastic results.  A beautifully prepared cloth may be constructed into a wearable item or perhaps framed as a piece of art, or a wall hanging.  In this workshop you will have multiple demonstrations, and be guided on suggested final product applications. Be prepared to be amazed with your results, have fun and witness colors merging together as they take on a life of their own! Work with varieties of fabrics within each method and observe countless outcomes. Samples of completed work and step-by-step instructions will guide participants.  No prior experience needed. All skills are welcome.

Figure Drawing - Bill Heydt

The artist and model is one of the most enduring relationships in art.  This is a class for students to learn to work from live models in a studio setting.  Although this course is designed for beginners, experienced artists are invited to join us and enjoy this drawing experience. Instruction is personalized and geared to each student's abilities.

Developing, Retouching and Presenting for Experienced Lightroom Users -
Jan Armor
Nov 10 - Dec 8
(4 classes - no class 11/24))
7 - 9  PM
In this class you will become a Lightroom expert and better photographer. You will learn how to process your images in many different ways using all of the tools, including not only the Basic set, but also the Tone Curve, Split Tone, Detail (sharpening and noise reduction), Lens Corrections and Effects. Color correct to perfection in HSL and create beautiful black and white pictures. One class will be a deep dive into the retouching tools and in another you will learn many ways to present, print and share your work like a professional. This class is for experienced users. 
Please have LR 6 (much preferred) or LR 4 or 5 your laptop.
$150 Members  $185 Non-members
