Awards:
|
|
|
|
1st Place:
Tricia Marcaccio
Aquatic Symphony
watercolor
|
|
A
very accomplished watercolorist whose brush stroked captures the
movement of water & waves as it pounds against the rocks with
a fluid ease. The
white sprays of foam on the waves are painted masterfully.
This is a watercolor with both light and strength in each
of its flowing strokes.
|
|
2nd Place:
Howard Rubenstein
Grief
gelatin silver print/acrylic
|
|
The
limited use of color, sparse figure, along with the simple breakup
of space, gave me the same strong feelings that a Marc Rothko
painting can illicit.
Simple design along with close colors reinforces the
feelings of “grief”.
This is a case of simple, direct and cleverness achieving a
powerful statement.
|
|
3rd Place:
Ken MacDonald
Controlled Flight
found objects
welded
|
|
Strong
use of directional design.
“Controlled Flight” visually occupies a space larger
than the piece actually is.
Each element leads the eye from one point to another and
then back again.

Honorable Mention:
Michael Miller
Lotus
photograph
|
|
Lotus
is both sculptural and sensual.
The detail of the droplets on the petals captures that
sensuality of the lotus.
There is an inner light that illuminates from within the
lotus’s center.
Ultimately this dramatic image of the Lotus gives the
viewer both drama and a sense of peace.
Very Zen.

|
Honorable Mention:
Jerry Powers
Farmland Near Lijiang
oil
|
|
The
panoramic view of “Farmland…” creates an atmospheric
painting that is lyrical. By
using washes, the pale colors reinforce the stillness of the
moment.
|
|
Judge's Choice:
Jill Tyler
Silky Masked Animals
oil
|
|
The
playful handling of colors and brush strokes done in a Fauvist
manner adds to the carnival feel of this painting.
The combinations used in the mixing of a human face on a
fish body and an elephants snake trunk lends an eerie exuberance
to the dark side of this childlike painting. Fun and scary at the
same time.
