Award Reception:
Juror's StatementJuror: Angel Dean Wiktionary defines chaos as: 1. A state of disorder. 2. A force that seeks to spread disorder. 3. Behavior that appears random and yet is governed by exact mathematical equations and so is actually deterministic. Chaotic systems typically exhibit exquisite sensitivity to initial conditions. 4. An unseen force or energy believed to drive the universe. There’s a first time for everything, and I have to preface this statement by telling you this is the first exhibition I have juried. I thank the Wickford Arts Association for asking me, and I thank Martha Guillette for suggesting my name. I am an artist who works in collage, printmaking, pastel, and photography. I have worked as an arts administrator at the Providence Art Club for the past 14 years. Before my life in Rhode Island, I lived for 15 years in the East Village in NYC. I’d also like to thank all the artists who put their work forward and entered this exhibition. Congratulations to those who were selected to be a part of this show, and who captured my attention in some way. Kudos to the award winners for shining through very strong competition! Further thanks go to Casey Nascimento, Marian O’Connell, and Sandra King for their assistance in making my task easier. Please know that for each piece that wasn’t selected, I voiced a sincere “I’m sorry”—and I really was. In making my selections, I stuck firmly to the “chaos” theme. A few entries were strong on theme but weak on presentation, and were not selected. I also had to eliminate several very fine (downright gorgeous) pieces that did not fit within the theme of chaos. You’ll see all levels of work in this exhibition, from masterful artists to passionate amateurs. Overall the work is of high quality, and some of it just “rang my bell.” Anne Wilkes Tucker defined juried exhibitions: "For each juried exhibition, the variables include the rules of submission, the vagaries of who decided to submit work to the competition, the pictorial traditions of that locality, and the visual inclinations of the juror. Each resulting exhibition reflects the particular tastes and responses by that particular juror to those particular submissions, both to the specific images and to the whole range submitted. The individual pictures are not seen in isolation. Comparisons can be enlightening." Thanks again to the Wickford Art Association for this opportunity to juror the first show of 2009. As an artist myself, it has been an eye-opening experience. The juror faces a major challenge making quick yet thoughtful decisions in regard to so many entries. I did my best to observe with a fair and open mind. There was so much high-quality work in all mediums, and I won’t feel bad next time I get turned down for a show because I know it isn’t personal. It's worth noting that for the smallest state in the country, we have an enormous number of extremely talented artists! Thanks for taking part in this exploration of “chaos” Gallery Hours:
