John Pitocco

Table for Three
photography

Table for Three by John Pitocco for its stark black & white study in contrasts. Black chairs, elegantly carved pattern exposed, in pure white snow. Engaging perspective, perfectly composed. There is a deafening silence about this image. It brings me peace and solitude. Simple and beautiful!

Lenny Rumpler

Shirts in the Sand
photography

Shirts in The Sand by Lenny Rumpler for its abstract quality, a sensual study of the human anatomy without the figure. Intriguing patterns, shape and texture. What remains after a body has vaporized, perhaps? From dust to dust…

Mark Jaffe

Mime at Rest
photography

Mime at Rest by Marc Jaffe for capturing a stolen moment or maybe not. It’s almost as though we shouldn’t be privy to this moment in time. I feel like a voyeur. I look, but I look away. Out of character, human and vulnerable – something to think about.

Honorable Mentions

Bob Baglini

Meditation
photography

Meditation by Bob Baglini is so aptly named. A transcendent landscape, inducing a quiet calm. Neutral tonal quality complements the mood. After resting in this image and prior to discovering its title, I felt as though I had meditated for 10 - 20 minutes. I’ve taken a deep, cleansing breath… Ahh!

Eric Wertheimer

Hearts of Stone
photography

Hearts of Stone by Eric Wertheimer a beautiful assemblage of unusually shaped stones, gifts of nature, an offering, artfully displayed. Clever placement of the one and only dark stone in the lower right corner to balance the hands in the upper left.

Nora Lewis  Juror

Congratulations to all of you for participating in the Second Annual Juried Photo Guild Show. I thank you for sharing your work with me and for challenging me as this year’s juror. The process was not without difficulty, particularly when it got down to the last seven images & there were only five awards!

Having our work judged is not always an easy thing. In fact, rather than use the word judged, why don’t we substitute the word selected. While the process of judging/selecting work or conferring awards is inherently based on certain objective criteria, it is highly subjective at the same time. Think about why you make the images you make. As photographers we are always making choices. What subject matter am I drawn to? How shall I compose the image? What do I include? What do I reject?  What perspective works best? What am I trying to communicate? Perhaps the answers are…You like it. It feels right. It resonates with you somehow. So, why did I select certain photos as award winners, but not others? Because my response to art comes from an intuitive/emotional place. Shape, form, texture, color, light, perspective, etc., all have their place, but that being said, it’s about what touches a deep place within.

In the end, just as you have responded with your eye and heart to your subject matter, I have responded similarly to your photographs. I have chosen the images that appeal to my sensibilities, just as you responded when making the images with your camera. Bear in mind that these were one individual’s decisions on one particular day. That being said, my selections are quiet, contemplative and meditative – very simple, yet strong in their simplicity. For the most part they are monochromatic images. They reveal something about you as an artist, and as artist/juror, they reveal something about me.

Once again, thank you for the privilege and honor. I hope you enjoy the show. YOU made it possible. And remember, continue asking questions…continue making choices…continue seeing…and above all, continue making pictures.

I’d also like to extend a special thank you to Casey & Mark Nascimento for their help in this process. WAA is fortunate to have you both as members of their organization.
