Judge's Comments

Because the watercolors and photographic works are particularly strong, making a decision among the offerings was extremely difficult.  Also impressive are the many oil paintings of varied genres done with infinite care and patience.

What to do?  In the end, my criteria for choosing settled on the confidence, skill and clarity of the artist's presentation and vision.  For instance, I love the straightforward, playful quality of Dorcas Greene's "Sarah's Favorite Hat", the manipulation of paint in Wanda Perkowska Codderre's "Morning Mist" and the orchestration of architectural detail with graphic notes in Grace Bentley Scheck's "Pastis".  Then there is the delicacy of Sandra DeAlteris's "Ebb Tide" with rocks like succulent oysters.  Or let's go to the solid forms and angled pockets of Bill Krul's "Tribute to Escher", then finally slip into the lulling, water-softened meeting of land and sea in Carole Berren's "Low Tide".  All enjoyable.

On another day or with a different juror...well, you know.

Thank You, I loved the work.
