Biography
I was born in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, and received my Bachelor of Arts degree from
Monmouth University. I served four years in the Navy,
including one in Vietnam. I began a commercial photography
career that has included assignments for (Doris Duke's)
Newport Restoration Foundation and The Preservation Society
of Newport County. I founded Armor Studio of Photography, in
Portsmouth, Rhode Island, which flourished for more than 25
years. I sold this business in 2002 in order to have more
time with family, and to pursue personal projects. I have
accepted editorial and special feature assignments for the
Providence Journal, RI Monthly, Newport Life, Victorian
Homes, and Romantic Homes magazines. I was honored to be one
of a select group asked to document "48 Hours in Rhode
Island", an extensive magazine feature and book about
our state that was published by RI Monthly. I have
photographed notables such as Felix DeWelden, Geoffrey
Wolfe, Patrick Kennedy, Admiral Stockdale, Robert Carothers,
George Bush (The Elder), two Episcopal Bishops and one
countess.
I have been documenting the
use and abuse of the land for years, donating my efforts to
The Aquidneck Island Land Trust, and the Newport Tree
Society. The Rhode Island Nurseries has been a personal
project since the mid eighties and I hope that the images
will one day become a book on preservation of open spaces.
In 1999 I was awarded a grant from The RI Council For The
Arts for my images of trees. I was given grants from the
Newport Tree Society and National Grid to photograph Rhode
Island's arboretum. Mrs. Hope Van Buren commissioned me to
photograph her lovely Beeches last year. In 2006 I received
a generous grant from the Prince Foundation on behalf of the
Sierra Club.
I believe that each viewer
brings their own stuff to one's work and has their own
relation to it. In my mind, that is the real beauty of it
all. I choose my subjects emotionally. Much of my work is
about the many interesting shapes found in nature, including
the human form. Some of my photographs are about the
mysteries of life. Recently I have been working in a
computer-assisted kind of photo-illustration, combining and
layering images to create a story or idea. I have also begun
to explore the possibilities inherent in digital video as a
means of self-expression.
Solo shows include Roger
Williams University, Facets Gallery, RI Bank, and the
Chestnut Hill Mall. Group shows include Portsmouth Arts
Guild, Green River, DeBlois, Jessica Hagen Gallery, and
Sakonnet Artists. Juried shows include Newport Art Museum,
Bristol Art Museum, Mystic Art Association, Wickford Art
Association, Portsmouth Arts Guild, Sakonnet Artists, Hope
Gallery and Green River Galleries. I have been a member of
Sakonnet Artists, and now represented at Istock.com. I am a
member and VP at Portsmouth Arts Guild.
Awards Include First Place in
the Newport Art Museum All Members Show, "Boat House At
Glenvaugh", "Best In Show" at the juried
DeBlois Gallery exhibit, 2003, and First Place at the
Sakonnet Artist Photography Show, juried by Stephen Brigitti.
In 2000, at the All Members Show, "Young Lindens Of
Blithewold" was chosen as the first place photograph.
I have taught both
traditional (film) photography and Photoshop at the Newport
Art Museum and elsewhere. I've conducted numerous digital
photo workshops for Portsmouth Arts Guild, Master Gardeners
(URI), Northeast Landscape Designers, Bristol Art Museum,
and Blithewold Arboretum.

Jason Brockert was born in 1971
as a native of Holliston, Massachusetts. His youth was
mostly spent exploring the woods behind his house with his
dog. He saw his rural town turn suburb in the short
span of a decade from 1980-90 and that transformation in
part fuels his current paintings. From those woods to
the suburbs and after a brief stint at architecture school,
he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Rhode
Island School of Design in 1994. During his time at
RISD he was a member of the European Honors Program in Rome
which was a defining time in his painting career.
Jason returned to Providence in 1997 and still makes his
home there where he works as both painter and painting
faculty at RISD.
Jason exhibits his work in
galleries across New England and is represented in many
collections in the US and Europe. His work has been
featured at such galleries as the CoSo gallery in Boston,
the Wheeler Gallery in Providence, and the Southern Vermont
Arts Center in Vermont, among others. Most recently he
has been awarded a Rhode Island State council of the arts
painting fellowship and has been a summer fellow at the Fine
Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
